Visit Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai

Overview

Wat Chedi Luang is situated in the beautiful culturally rich Old City of Chiang Mai and is one of the popular and important temples located in the northern part of Thailand. This ancient temple was built in the 14th century and is renowned for one of the largest stupa (known as Chedi). In the ancient times, it was one of the tallest structures in the old city of Chiang Mai.

What are the highlights of Wat Chedi Luang?

  • The main highlight of Wat Chedi Luang is its giant chedi (stupa), a tall tower that overlooks the old city of Chiang Mai. Originally built in the 14th century, the chedi stood at 82 meters, but an earthquake in 1545 reduced its height to the current 60 meters. It remains a magnificent landmark, showcasing Lanna architectural style.

  • Wat Chedi Luang houses the spiritual Inthakin Shrine, also known as the City Pillar. According to local beliefs, this shrine offers protection and brings prosperity to the city. Each year, the Inthakin Festival is celebrated with special ceremonies and prayers.

  • The Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaew), Thailand’s most revered Buddha statue, resided here for 80 years before being relocated to Bangkok. Today, visitors can see a replica of the Emerald Buddha at the temple, attracting both tourists and pilgrims.

  • Wat Chedi Luang is also known for monk chats, a unique program where visitors can engage with monks to learn about their lifestyle, Buddhism, and meditation practices.
